THE WHETSTONE
FOOD FOREST
The Whetstone Food Forest is more than a community garden- it’s a living classroom, a sanctuary, and a thriving ecosystem where people, plants, and animals come together in harmony. This town-owned space invites everyone to observe, cultivate, and celebrate the rhythms of nature, while growing food and habitat that nourish both the land and the community.
BUILDING THE WHETSTONE FOOD FOREST

HOW IT ALL STARTED
Launched in spring of 2024 with support from a Vermont Urban Forestry grant through the U.S. Forest Service, the Food Forest is working to transform a FEMA-designated flood zone on Western Avenue into a resilient landscape. Its location, which limits building, makes it perfect for our purpose. Soil tests have confirmed the area safe for cultivating food.
The project began with careful observation of natural patterns, plant surveys, and documentation of existing conditions- laying the foundation for thoughtful planting. The focus has been on native species, edible and medicinal plants, and wildlife supporting habitat, creating a diverse ecosystem that grows stronger each season.
In the first two years, community members and volunteers planted over 30 trees, dozens of shrubs, and a wide array of herbaceous plants (for a full list of plants, click this link). Removal of invasive species such as virginia creeper, swallowwort & oriental bittersweet vines, Japanese knotweed etc. is an ongoing effort.
We are grateful for support from the VT Urban and Community Forestry Program, NEGEF, VCN, VFB, and the Town of Brattleboro.
HOW CAN I HELP?
